Green Ethernet Switch
I was in the market for a new network switch. Seems easy enough. As I was looking around, I came across D-Link’s Green Ethernet series of products.
According to the documentation:
- Automatically powers down ports that have no link
- Budgets power output for different ethernet cable lengths
- Complies with Califonia CEC regulations and RoHS directive
- Uses recyclable packaging
The fine print is as follows:
Maximum power savings when compared to a D-Link conventional switch. Uses up to 80% less energy when connected devices are powered down and up to 40% less energy when connected devices are used 10 hours and powered down 14 hours over a 24 hour period, when connected via 20 meter ethernet cables.
The power savings comes from powering down ports that are not in use. They have to be actually powered down, not just in standby. So if you leave your computers on all the time your actual power savings will be less.
Even so, I would still buy this switch just to continue to send the message to manufacturers that we want more responsible goods and manufacturing methods.
The price was comparable to other similar devices so it was not a hard decision to go with this unit.
So if you are in need of expanding your network, consider D-Link’s Green Ethernet Switch
