Not So Big
It is always amazing to me how something can be around for years before it comes across my desk. Granted that can be said for numerous things, but everytime I find these items, I wonder why I have never heard of them before.
If you read my post on Responsible Building, you know about my disappointment with the new houses I have looked at. Today fate led me to EcoHaus, a Seattle based company dedicated to providing green building supplies and household products. There is alot of great information and alot of great products available for contractors and individuals.
Surfing their site brought me to Sarah Susanka. She is a bestselling author and architect. I find that her vision of the perfect home closely matches my own. She has a build better, not bigger approach that has been stewing in my head ever since I started looking at new construction homes. She advocates quality, not quantity in our homes and in our lives.
Her first book, The Not So Big house, published in 1998, emphasises comfort, beauty, and a high level of detail. Most importantly it gives homeowners the language they need to communicate what they really want. A house that goes beyond the ordinary to a place you can actually call home.
I have purchased this book hoping to gain some insite to my future home. I will let you know how it goes.
