Are Forgotten Appliances Costing You Money?

Did you know that some electronics, especially older models, still draw power even when they are off?  When was the last time you walked through your house and looked at everything that was plugged in?

Many items such as stereo components and VCRs have more like a standby mode rather than an off mode.  This may be noticeable by the LED display always showing something, but often times there is no indication that the unit is drawing power.

If you have children, it would be prudent to walk through their romms now and again to see what they have powered on. Lava lamps, night lights, and other mood lighting typically stays on 24 hours a day without you noticing.  Let your kids participate in your energy saving efforts.  It can be easily turned into a game to keep their interest.

If you have items that you use rarely, such as a VCR or older television, unplug them when not in use.  There are remote switches that you can purchase that allow you to essentially do the same thing but with the convenience of a remote or timer.

Do you really need the mood lighting that is on all the time?  What about your outside lights, do they stay on all night? Unless your high security cameras need light to see, there is not much reason to have your porch light on throughout the wee hours.

These may seem like minor items, be the small things add up.  Lighting accounts for nearly 25% of US electricity use.  Anything that is costing you money without providing you benefit should be attended to.
