Topsy Turvy Planter Review

This is my final review of the Topsy Turvy planter.

My overall impression of the hanging planter has been favorable.  While my neighbors plants in the ground have been attacked by snails and other pests, my plants have been pest free.  And now it is the beginning of the harvest.

I can now call this experiment a success.  I am not the greatest gardener, I have nearly killed these plants on a few occasions, yet they have survived.  This have more to do with the environment than the planter so I would like to pass on a few lessons learned.
  • Watering is more critical in these hanging planters than for a plant in the ground.  As the weather got a bit warmer I quickly found that I needed to water the plants daily.
  • I can’t say for sure of the plant food made any real difference.  That would require a much more controlled experiment.  Use your best gardener judgement here.
  • After watering, the planter will leak, like any planter.  So if you have this set up on a balcony you may want to put something under it to catch the fallout.
  • A full planter and mature plant will have some weight to them.  Plan your hanger appropriatly based on what you are planting.
  • Be sure to locate your plants in an area with the right amount of sun and shade.  I think my cucumber plant would have appreciated a little less direct sunlight.

Overall, my California weather is pretty forgiving, not to many hot days during summer.  I would say that if tomatoes can grow in your area without too much difficulty, then they will grow in this planter.  If you recall, I started out with plants that were smaller than recommended and tried to kill them due to lack of watering on a few occasions, and now we will be enjoying home grown produce for a few months.
